Featured Sights
- Natural Attractions
The deep blue Mediterranean Sea, which surrounds the Maltese Islands, is full of natural wonders and distinctive beauty. Whether visitors are under or above the water, there are various sites that can be visited and appreciated for all that they are.
The strong topographic structures of the Maltese Islands also continue underwater, so visitors can find a most bizarre underwater landscape of the Mediterranean, with an abundance of caves, holes, grottos and crevices. Caves that equal in size to a large sports hall are not unusual and there are some wrecks of ships and aircraft around Malta, which also have become the home to a multitude of underwater life .
Sites include the Blue Grotto, Calypso's Cave, the Inland Sea, the Azure Window, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Dingli Cliffs.
- Art Galleries
The Maltese Islands with their deep colours and rugged landscape have long inspired artists, photographers and sculptors, both local and foreign. Apart from the rich legacy of the artists commissioned by the Knights of St John, there are many works of excellent contemporary in Malta today.
The Centre for Creativity at St James Cavalier, Valletta, showcases their work. Other regular venues in the capital for art, sculpture and ceramics' exhibitions are The National Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Museum of Archaeology. If you'd like details of local artists, staff at both the Cavalier and the Fine Arts Museums can help.
Galleries include Artitude Gallery, Gallery G, Manoel Theatre Courtyard, St. James Cavalier, Tempra Museum and Wignacourt Museum. - Cultural Attractions
With 7,000 years of history, the cultural attractions to visit are abundant - the Megalithic Temples (including Ggantija, the oldest freestanding temple in the world), The Knights of St. John's significant sites, WWII sites and historical re-enactments are a must. Interactive walkthrough and multimedia attractions offer an overview of Malta's history in under an hour and are a great way to learn what visitors will later be looking at.
Villages, such as Valletta, Mdina, Rabat and the Three Cities hold cultural gems and sites only found on the Maltese Islands.
