22nd November 2016 – The Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST) and the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) today announced the signing of an agreement between both organizations to support the development of cyber security incident response capability in the region.
As part of the agreement, FIRST will make available its training curriculum and capabilities to LACNIC for use with regional teams. LACNIC will assist in developing a local cadre of trainers that can facilitate FIRST training courses within the region, and will partner closely with FIRST on the organization of events in the wider region.
FIRST and LACNIC will also collaborate on the affiliation and introduction of regional CSIRT teams to the global incident response community.
Margrete Raaum, Chairman of FIRST, said: FIRST and LACNIC have a long history of working together on cyber security events, and LACNIC has long been an outstanding contributor to the FIRST community. This agreement will enable us to take the next step in our collaboration, and enable both of our organizations to work together more closely on improving incident response capability in the region. We’re excited about the opportunities this agreement unlocks for CSIRT in the region, and look forward to partnering more closely with the team at LACNIC.
Carlos Martínez, CTO of LACNIC, said: Cybersecurity issues widely affect the Internet and represent a growing concern for all who believe that the net is an enabling factor for the development and growth of all communities. LACNIC and FIRST share common values and a vision of a secure, resilient and stable internet for all. We believe that by working together even more closely we will be able to contribute to the creation of human capacity in incident response in the Latin American and Caribbean Region
.
LACNIC is a non-government organization established in Uruguay in 2002, which is responsible for assigning and administering Internet numbering and other resources for Latin America and the Caribbean. It is one of five regional internet registries worldwide. LACNIC has supported previous FIRST TC’s in San José, Costa Rica in September of 2016 and Bogotá, Colombia in 2015.
