First NETSEC training in Fukuoka

The FIRST NETSEC SIG successfully launched its first Network Security Fundamental Training for the FIRST community and attendees of the 2024 FIRST Annual Conference in Fukuoka. The training took place on June 15, 2024, the day following the conference, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Seahawk Hilton Fukuoka. It was attended by key figures in network security in Japan and members from NETSEC SIG who are involved in network coordination (e.g., APNIC, JANOG). The training was planned by all NETSEC SIG co-chairs, its execution led by FIRST NETSEC SIG co-chairs John Kristoff, Merike Kaeo, Aaron Kaplan and organized by Hendrik Adrian. The event facility was generously sponsored by Cyber Emergency Center of LAC.

Aligned with the FIRST NETSEC SIG’s mission, the training focused on promoting education on network infrastructure security and highlighted foundational security concepts crucial for incident responders. Attendees were reminded that basic security measures can significantly reduce the damage from sophisticated attacks.

Key topics included DNS security, routing security (RPKI, BGP), network credential management, and DDoS mitigation techniques methods such as Packet Filtering and Remote Triggered Blackhole Filtering (RTBH). Other topics such as DNS Amplification and the use of Passive DNS were also covered. The event concluded with a discussion on recent resources and communities in network security, followed by a dinner with the trainers and attendees.

If you are FIRST members in the networking security field and interested in accessing the training materials or engaging in further discussions on network security, you can apply to join the NETSEC SIG via its SIG page.

Kudos to the trainers, John Kristoff, Merike Kaeo, Aaron Kaplan and to the organizer, Hendrik Adrian.
